HVAC End of Winter Maintenance
With springtime just around the corner, it is the perfect time to be thinking of doing some end-of-season maintenance on your heating system. While it may not be warm enough outside to merit using your air conditioning system just yet, it is likely that you will be using less and less heating over the coming weeks. That means it’s important to ensure that your heating system is prepared to be shut off for the months ahead.
Remember – the more you do now to prep your heating system, the less potential there is for damage to the system or poor air quality in your home once it’s time to start the heating system back up again. Additionally, taking the steps to care for your heating system now ensures that hidden dangers such as carbon monoxide leaks and dust buildup are taken care of, as these problems can worsen while your heating system is shut off and lead to serious problems at the beginning of the next cool season.
Maintenance Basics
If you haven’t changed the filter in your HVAC system, now is most the time to do so. Filters have a tendency to collect a lot of dust and dirt over the winter season, especially when your heater has been used on a regular basis. As a crucial component of both the heating and air conditioning of your HVAC system, it is important to ensure your filter is clear and clean for the upcoming warmer months.
Homeowners should also take the time to inspect what they can of their HVAC system’s various connections, as well as any exposed parts of their HVAC system. During this process, search for potential damage to the system, and use your other senses to make note of any unusual aromas that may indicate a problem in need of attention.
Finally, even though it may not be quite time to use it yet, go ahead and run your air conditioning system. Ensure your thermostats are in good working order and that the air conditioning is fully operational. Taking care of any problems now will prevent even bigger problems, in the long run.
Preventative Maintenance
Now is also the time to consider having regular maintenance performed on your HVAC system. Consumers Energy Management recommends preventative maintenance of your HVAC system twice a year, and there is no better time to have this preventative maintenance done than at the end of the winter season. Preventative maintenance of your HVAC system includes a complete cleaning of the system, in addition to checks on all the major components of the system in order to ensure that everything is in good working order.
While there are many tasks that you can take care of yourself, there are some things that are always better left in the hands of the professionals. Having regular maintenance done on your HVAC system, especially at key times throughout the year such as the end of winter, will help to produce better and healthier air quality within your home in addition to improving the overall life of your heating system.
