Making Adjustments for the Warmer Months
With the arrival of the spring season comes a change in the way that homeowners use their HVAC system. Bearing that in mind, there are a few things that HVAC professionals strongly advise you do to ensure that your air conditioning system is prepared to handle the rigors of the upcoming warmer months, from being better equipped to keep out potentially harmful allergens to being able to withstand regular, day-to-day use and reducing energy usage and cost until the dog days of summer have ended. A few simple adjustments can make a big difference to an HVAC system.
Getting Started
Many homeowners may become overwhelmed with the larger tasks at hand, and it can be easy to forget that some of the most important things that can be done to improve the health and efficiency of an HVAC system start with the basics.
Those who have older thermostats in their home may consider the installation of programmable, “smart” thermostats that will ensure their home stays comfortable while preventing over-usage. In addition to big savings on energy costs, the installation of smart thermostats can keep your HVAC system from working harder than it has to, which can extend its life and reduce repair costs down the line.
Similarly, those who already have these kinds of thermostats in their home should take the time during to reprogram them for the coming warmer months. Just a few adjustments to the thermostat can make a big difference.
This is also prime time for homeowners to reevaluate the timing of their regular maintenance tasks, such as the changing of filters in their HVAC system. Among these jobs is the regular cleaning and changing of the air filters, a task that should ideally be performed every one to three months.
However, do bear in mind that certain factors may change the frequency with which you should change the air filters in a home. If your home environment is more conducive to dust and dander buildup – for example, people who own pets or those who live in dusty environments – should change their air filters more frequently. Additionally, those with allergy issues, those who have older HVAC systems and anybody who is concerned about the air quality of their home should change their air filters on a more regular basis.
Another thing to consider is the quality of the air filters being used in a home. Cheaper air filters remove less dust and dirt, require more frequent replacement, and may not do enough to improve overall air quality. It can be a good idea to invest in better air filters, including HEPA filters, specially designed for people with allergy issues.
Above all, remember that spring is the perfect time to schedule professional cleaning and maintenance with your HVAC professionals. While there are many things that you can do on your own to improve the efficiency of your HVAC system, only a professional with the proper training and equipment can ensure that everything is in working order and identify potential problems before they arise.
