How to Tell if Your Furnace Needs Repair

During the cold winter months in Canada, your heater gets a lot of use. If your heater goes out, not only will you and your family feel the chill, you also may be putting your health at risk, as toxic gases may be released into the air. In addition to that your water pipes may freeze. Therefore, you need to be aware of the signs that your furnace may be about to break so that you can get help before it becomes a major disaster.

You Hear Weird Noises

Almost all furnaces make some type of noise, especially when the furnace turns on and off. However, if you begin to hear weird noises, especially groaning, banging, or whining, then you may have a problem that requires repair. It could be something simple, such as a loose belt or an ignition issue, or you may need a new furnace. As soon as you notice an odd sound, you should call in an expert to check out the system to see what may be causing the issue.

Your Home Cannot Seem to Get Warm

An old, warn out furnace does not work as efficiently as a new one. Therefore, if you notice that your home seems to never get warm anymore, you may need to get your system checked out. It might be that the thermostat is simply broken, or you may have issues in the furnace or duct system. Another sign that the system is not working efficiently anymore is that your heating bill goes up, especially if you believe you are not using the furnace any more than the previous month or year.

The Flame on Your Furnace Turns Yellow

Although you may be used to associating yellow flames with fire, you actually want blue flames in your furnace. If your burner flame turns yellow or is flickering, then you may have excess carbon monoxide gas, which is highly poisonous. Other signs of carbon monoxide include precipitation on the windows, water leaking from your chimney, rust on the pipes, and soot around your furnace. If your family begins to feel ill, especially frequent headaches and flu like symptoms, then it could be carbon monoxide poisoning rather than a bug. If you notice any sign of carbon monoxide, you need to call someone in right away to check it out before it becomes a health hazard to you and your family.

Heating systems typically last around 15 to 20 years, if you are lucky. Therefore, if you have not replaced your system in a decade or so, then it is time to start looking for signs of repairs. Once you have had to perform a repair on your system, it may not be long before you will need to replace the entire system. By keeping aware of the signs that your heater is beginning to fail, you can often fix the problem before it becomes are larger issue. At Consumers Energy Management, we perform routine check ups and repairs on furnaces to ensure they will keep you warm throughout the entire season.
