Tips for Reducing your Energy Consumption this Winter
During the winters in Canada, it is common to keep your heating system constantly running, driving your energy costs up. By following the following simple tips, you can significantly reduce the cost of running your heating system, while still keeping yourself warm.
Look for Any Drafts
One of the biggest ways to lose heat is by having small cracks in your home letting the cold air in and the hot air out. These are often around windows and exterior doors, although if you have any significant cracks in your walls or ceilings, you may find the air getting out there. To reduce your energy consumption, simply seal off these leaks using foam weatherstripping or caulk. You can also cover any single-pane windows with plastic film to provide it with more defenses against the cold air.
Insulate
Insulation goes a long way in keeping your house warm during the winter and cool during the summer months. Not only do your walls need insulation, but areas such as your attics, basements, piping, electrical wires, HVAC vents, and any other areas that come into contact with the outside temperatures also require some type of insulation. There are a variety of ways to insulate your home, and this investment will help save you money by lowering your energy consumption.
Keep the Heat as Low as Possible
One of the best ways to reduce your energy consumption is to simply lower the temperature on your thermostat. Instead of keeping your house so warm so you can wear your summer clothes, wear sweaters and use blankets so you can keep it at a lower degree. Even turning the temperature one to two degrees lower will reduce your energy usage. When you are not home and during the night, turn the thermostat even lower. If possible, install a programmable thermostat to keep your home at the right temperatures throughout the day without you having to worry about it.
Let the Sun Warm your Home
On the sunny days of winter, take advantage of the solar heating and open any curtains or blinds in your home to let the sunshine inside. It will warm up the rooms during the day, so you can rely less upon the heating system. Although this only works on the days it is sunny, over the course of the season you will see a reduction of your energy consumption.
Keep your HVAC System Maintained
Another great way to reduce your energy consumption is to perform regular tune-ups and preventative maintenance on your system. This will keep your system running at the optimal level, so it will not use more energy than necessary. This not only reduces your overall energy consumption, while also maintaining the life of your system and ensuring that it remains safe to use.
Buying energy efficient heating systems helps you to reduce your energy consumption, but there is more you can do to keep your heating costs at a minimum. It does not take much to keep your home comfortable and defended against the harsh winter, while keeping your heating and electricity bill as low as possible. Not only will you save money, but you will also help to save the environment.
